News Archives: 2005 – 2008

December 2007/January 2008

The winter months have been cold and snowy this year. Mel Hare, having worked with GETC all last summer, yearned for warmer temps and went to Florida for a couple of months. Esty Saenger came back from Switzerland to work with us for several weeks. Esty had ridden GE Cyclone to 4th place at last years Tevis.

On Dec 30th and 31st, some GETC horses entered a ride in New Mexico. The results:

Dec 30: New Year in New Mexico, 100 mile FEI

2nd Place: Hanna CW ridden by Christoph
3rd Place: TC Mounshine ridden by Esty Saenger

BEST CONDITION: TC Mounshine

Dec 31:New Year in New Mexico, 50 mile

1st Place: DWA Powerball and Christoph

TC Mounshine has been trained and campaigned by Dian. Because of her treatments, she was unable to come to this ride. She let Esty ride one of her best horses. Thanks Dian, for all the work you have put into these horses.

Dian is recovering well and will be riding strong again this spring. We are grateful for all the support we have received from the endurance community and our friends all over. These challenging times have made all of us bond together. All your help and support has been greatly appreciated.

Looking ahead, GETC and EQUFLEXUSA are preparing for the AERC Convention, where a joint booth will be set up. Please visit us at our booth, we have free goodies just for stopping by.

Christoph will also be a speaker at the Saturday “Ask the Experts” panel.
Come and join us all at the Convention!

NOVEMBER 2007

MOAB CANYONS 2 DAY RIDE

Thank You, Sheri Griffith, and all the volunteers that helped make this ride.

What an awesome ride!! Everyone plan this one for 2008. The plan is that it should be a 3-day Pioneer in 2008. The weather was beautiful. The trails were marked awesomely, the ride went smoothly. This is one of the most scenic rides around. It was located in the Canyonlands BLM area near Canyonlands National Park. Around 200 horse & riders showed up. Very successful.

GETC took 10 horses to this ride. GETC had 7 horses starting the 1st day.
David Shefrin completed his 1st 50 mile race riding DWA Sablisa.
Marcy Till did an awesome job w/Trinity. It was their 1st 50. Janelle Warkentin, did an awesome job w/HL Kastaspell. It was also their 1st 50.

GETC would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our great friends, Mel Hare, Marcy Till, Janelle & Jermey Warkentin and Valerie Maxwell. Janelle, Jermey & Valerie traveled all the way from Oregon to do this ride. Jeremey was so awesome, he worked very hard to help us crew and care for all our horses. He would drive in and feed the horses both morning & night in order for us to care for the horses at the ride camp. Marcy Till, our good friend, helped me load and organize the stuff for the trip home and unloaded the trailer once back. This was stuff, lots of stuff for 10 horses.

This was Dian’s 1st ride back since her medical diagnosis & surgery in June. I dearly thank my partner, Christoph Schork, for working twice as hard to enable me and everyone else to ride like crazy. I can’t thank these great friends enough for enabling me to get out and ride my brains out. The results were fantastic!!

THE WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Aachen, Germany August 21st 2006

The World Equestrian Championship in Aachen, Germany, was the highlight of the year. Christoph and Taj Rai Hasan (aka Husky) were part of the 6 member USA Endurance Team.

We, (Christoph, Dian, and Husky) left Moab on August 1st and traveled to LA, where we stayed at Carolyn Hock’s place in Riverside, CA. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Carolyn and Chris Hock for their hospitality and help. The logistics of flying overseas can be challenging, but with their help it went smoothly. We flew out of LA w/Pet Jets to Amsterdam where the USA team reunited.

Our stabling in Aachen was set up at Gut Neuhaus ( HYPERLINK “http://www.gut-neuhaus.de” www.gut-neuhaus.de) owned by Rainer Plum. It is a beautiful state of the art horse stable with indoor arenas and horse trails right out the back door. All our horses adjusted well and recovered from the travel stress within a couple of days. We proceeded to train and learn the trails for the race. We set up extra pairs of shoes and made the decision to add studs because of the rain. It rained everyday in the month of August.

The course consisted of either pavement or thick mud. When race day came, the rain of the previous weeks had left its mark, making the trails very muddy. The start was overcast without rain. A shoe was sucked off after 20 miles. I put on an Easyboot, but had to slow down so we wouldn’t lose the Easyboot. We arrived at vet gate # 2, with a sound horse, but lost 20 minutes off our planned arrival time. We had great farriers for the team, Jeff Pauley & Mustafah. Jeff worked hard and fast to replace the lost shoe w/Mustafah helping. The farriers were very busy during the entire race working together to replace the lost shoes on all the USA team horses. Shoes were being sucked off like crazy. The rain started during loop 4, along with the temperature dropping dramatically. All competitors had to contend with running water down the roads and trails, which turned into creeks and increased the mud. Unfortunately, at vet gate #5 (mile 90), we were vetted out of the race.

The USA had 3 of the 5 riders finish the WEC, Kathy Downs, Meg Sleeper, and Jennifer Niehaus. Christoph Schork and Jeff Mattingley were vetted out at different times.

A very special THANK YOU goes out to my crew. The crew consisted of Dian, Clive Pollitt (our dear friend from Scotland), Sheri Griffith and Andy Bown. They did a superb job crewing for Christoph and Husky. Many thanks, to them and all the staff who helped getting us through the challenging day.

We send out a huge thank you to our Chef d’Equipe, Val Kanavy and assistant Chef d’Equipe, Laura Hayes, who did a terrific job on such short notice and Jamie Saults, our coordinator from USEF. We also thank our team Veterinarians, Tom Timmons & Ann Stewart for their support and guidance through the event, to our Team Farrier, Jeff Pauley, to our support Veterinarian from Uruguay, Flavia, and our support Farrier, Mustafah.

JULY 2006

CHRISTOPH WAS SELECTED FOR THE USA WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM

Originally the trial run was going to be held in conjunction with the Likely 50. The Likely 50 ride was cancelled. On short notice, Chris and Cheryl were contacted about a possible course for our 39 mile demo ride and hosting 5 of the riders trying out for spots on the USA World Endurance Team. DECEMBER 2005

GETC horses did an excellent job in 2005!!!!

Dian and Christoph attended the National Training Squad Clinic in Red Bluff, CA in December. We extend a special thank you to Clarissa for allowing all the National Training Squad riders to use her facility, Hale Arena. Thank You Joyce/Dennis Sousa and Clarissa for allowing us to use their horses for this clinic. The three days were filled with very educational, in-depth shoeing evaluations, fine tuning our riding skills w/dressage and riding lessons, and Kentucky Equine provided us with and equine nutritionist, Kathleen Crandell. Kathleen provided us with a valuable analysis of our feeding routines that enabled us to change and correct any unbalances. The evenings were dedicated to lectures on equine performance nutrition and shoeing the performance horse. This was a very valuable clinic.

NOVEMBER 2005

GETC is back from Silver State Point to Point in Jean, NV with great results.

November is the last month for competitions in the AERC calendar year.  The November results are followed with keen interest by a lot of riders. It’s exciting to watch how riders checking their placing in AERC categories try and get in the last races of the year. We headed to Silver State Point to Point in Jean, NV.

Unfortunately, this is the last year this ride was held. We are glad we were able to attend this ride for the last time. We would like to send a very gracious THANK YOU, to Claire Toomey, for all her hard work and dedication for putting on this ride over Thanksgiving for years. What will we do next year?

Our friend Sheri Griffith cancelled her plans on attending Grand Canyon XP ride this year and headed to Louisana to help with search and rescue of abandoned animals and destitute ranchers. We all say “Thank You!! Sheri for your kind efforts and hard work to help in Relief Efforts after Katrina”. If you see her at a ride in the future, please don’t hesitate to say to her, thanks!

November we are planning to attend Silver State Point to Point in Jean, NV.

TEVIS 2005

CONGRATULATIONS CHRISTOPH & TAJ RAI HASAN 3RD PLACE

The weekend before, Enrique and Christoph entered the prestigious Tevis race in California. Temperatures were pretty warm this year, which resulted in the low completion rate of only 44%. Christoph went on to ride Taj Rai Hasan (Husky) to a third place finish, arriving at Auburn at 11. 26 pm. Husky looked great at the finish line and completed with all A’s during the final vet scoring. Unfortunately, DWA Sabella took a bad step early on, which resulted in a minor lameness and Enrique had to retire her from the race.

Dian & Ed Green did the crewing for Christoph and Enrique. Ed Green, a GETC clinic participant, flew in from Florida to help Christoph & Dian. Then Enrique stepped in to also help after his unfortunate early retirement from the race. Thank you very much Ed for such a great commitment on coming to Tevis. All 3 did an outstanding job and were a big help contributing to Husky’s great finish. Without them, it would not have been possible to succeed. A BIG THANK YOU for all your hard work to, Dian, Ed & Enrique.

The turnout was amazing and all participants learned a lot about horsemanship and colt training during the 4 days.
