What Is Thrush?

Thrush is a bacterial infection caused by anaerobic bacteria growing within the frog area of the hoof. It often appears as a foul-smelling discharge in the hoof and can lead to tissue degeneration and hoof decay. With proper care and treatment, thrush can be effectively managed and cured. Thrush is easily identified by a veterinarian or farrier. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent discomfort and more serious hoof damage.

Causes of Horse Thrush

Thrush commonly develops when horses are kept in damp, dirty environments for extended periods. Excess moisture softens the hooves and reduces their ability to recover naturally. The primary contributing factors include:
  • Poor hoof hygiene
  • Wet and muddy conditions
  • Dirty stables or paddocks
  • Inadequate hoof care
In moist and contaminated environments, bacteria can penetrate the hoof, particularly in the central sulcus and frog area, leading to infection. Prompt treatment can prevent tissue damage and long-term complications.

Symptoms of Thrush

  • Strong foul odor from the hoof
  • Gray or black discharge
  • Black discoloration of hoof tissue
  • Softening of the hoof horn
  • Sensitivity or discomfort in severe cases

Prevention

Maintaining clean, dry stables and practicing regular hoof care are essential for preventing thrush. Hypozin can also be used as a preventative treatment. Apply a thin layer whenever the frog area becomes soft or exposed to excessive moisture.

Hypozin Composition

Hypozin contains a very high concentration of zinc oxide, significantly higher than traditional zinc ointments (which typically contain about 10% zinc oxide). Zinc oxide helps dry affected areas and protects the hoof from moisture, urine, and manure commonly found in stable environments. The carefully balanced formulation is designed to deliver optimal hoof care and protection.
